I think this will be thanks for nothing, because my advice is simply "don't".

Back in 2000 I remember downloading a form for something, filling it with values, saving it with values, printing and then just manually signing it to send back to whichever institution had issued it. Next year, this wasn't possible anymore. That is, I could enter the values and print, but I couldn't save. It may be the switch from Acrobat 3 to 4, or whichever tool was used to create it was changed.

Eight years later I tried to create such fillable PDFs and guess what, there were about three different sets of specifications on how to do it, i.e. Adobe has changed the standard twice. The only promising option was to buy a document server from Adobe, have all workstations use the latest Acrobat (v9 at the time, IIRC) and suffer the cost of about $6000. Various other tools which were promising this or that way to handle fields in PDF would either deliver files incompatible with several versions of Acrobat, or would require a special reader of their own... after a week of frantically reading the specs and API documents by several manufacturers, we had to drop the whole project.

Now it's eight more years later, and I still don't want to go there.
