>>>Maybe we'll solve the problem of our decaying roads and bridges by making them obsolete with gadgets like this.

>The robots are coming. ;-) Amazon is talking about fleets of drones delivering packages to your door using the sort of technology you describe. But until we have flying cars as well, roads still have a future: in England, self-driving trucks will be tested later this year while Japan already has self-driving taxis in Fujisawa with plans for fleet conversion before the 2020 Olympics. We're about to experience a travel renaissance- which is well overdue IMHO. The concept of human beings steering tons of metal hurtling along roads, is contrary to expectations in 2016 and will seem incredible when we look back in just a decade. We may well be the last of those fortunate enough to know what it means to just get out and drive - to get your motor runnin', head out on the highway, looking for adventure, in whatever comes our way. ;-)
The fleets of drones delivering packages might seem cute to an isolated house in the middle of nowhere but in high density urban housing areas (where most people live) its just not going to work. Do I want to walk down the road with drones dodging around me . No.
Also the self driving truck trains. Great idea but what about all the non self driving cars around them and why not put that freight where it belongs. On rails.
