TrueCrypt is EOL, no updates anymore, and that is why it is no longer recommended. However, BestCrypt is essentially the same application and still actively being developed and maintained.

I use BestCrypt and it works very well. Your problem is that in order to access the drive it has to be unlocked and therefore open to access. What do you want to store on this drive?
