In the link/PDF I cited, there's also a Presidential Transition Act that provides Secret Service protection for former presidents, their spouses, and children (up to age 16). I'll grant that Secret Service protection should be afforded - but that is a pittance.
Beyond that, they should tie this to what a president makes after office. In history, yes, there were a few presidents (going back in history) who struggled financially (and we're not talking about this Clinton "cry me a river, we struggled" garbage). But other presidents have done quite well afterwards and really are not in need of this. I am supremely confident that Barack Obama will do very well after he leaves the White House and will not need this $$$. As I said before, it's bad optics.
