Sure, VFP is not the perfect place to do the job. VFP is no Perl or python. But since the parsing requirements remain simple, I should be able to cope with some reasonably straightforward procedural code.

“separator” around interchangeably, and the VFP
documentation doesn’t help because it misuses
them. However, delimiters and separators are actually
two different things, and knowing the difference
can be very helpful"

I never really spend the time to get into the matter but I understand now why, at times, I am still confused with parts of the foxpro syntax.
