I just tried out in DosBox, and it converts the filename into 8.3. Perhaps it may be possible under Dos7, i.e. the DOS for Windows 98 (the last one which could boot into DOS without running Windows, we used that a lot back then) it may have support at the OS level, or there was some add on (LFN something) that would allow the OS to support long filenames. I don't have that anymore so can't really try.
