Put lots of pictures of the actual item in your ad too - if it's something you can show powered on and working, that really helps too. As someone else mentioned already - I would give craigslist a shot first. I've sold a few things and bought a lot of things off craigslist - I usually just meet the person somewhere public - like a McDonald's or something unless it's a car I'm dealing with.
