They were formed in 2002. Certainly not as old as the main group, but I think the term "newish" is a bit misleading.
Some of their other controversial positions are not lost on me. But I think a more accurate assessment is that they weren't willing to carry on the party line of the larger group (which has a rather humorous section on their main page about climate change).
