It becomes very discouraging to the people too. I'd say it's safe to say that pretty much everyone wants the money out of politics. So if that is what everyone wants, and our elected officials are not moving on it - then all faith in the system is ruined, people get discouraged and frustrated, and then just give up. Now we're in a situation where the atmosphere in Washington is so utterly toxic that the elected officials spend over 50% of their time (no joke - that much) sitting on the phone fundraising. So spend 50% of time on phone asking for money and the other 1/2 making laws. hmmmm anyone see a flaw here? Fixing something like this will take not just a brake politician, but one than can encourage a lot of new people to become political active and a new generation of elected officials - because it's going to take a generation to fix it - not going to happen over night.
