There are many things causing this error. Craig Berntson has some good information on his site:

Also, I've found it caused by bad hardware - particularly bad printer drivers (HP drivers for HP5 printers are poor) and bad network cables and hubs. If the problem appears first at one computer consistently check the drivers and hardware on that computer.

And, of course, sometimes it is a corrupted index.
