With vendors making constant changes, everybody had to learn on the job, so I agree that personal ability was a bigger consideration.

Mike and Pete were good friends from the day they started accounting classes together.
It soon became clear the Pete was challenged regarding numbers- and he dropped out after a month.

Ten years later Mike, now a successful accountant with a split ranch on a cul-de-sac in Westchester was walking to a client on Park Avenue in NYC when a long limo pulled up and Pete yelled, "Get in, Mike"

"Mike" Pete said "take the afternoon off and come up and have lunch with me at the Rainbow Room. I own it. In fact, I own the building."

"Wait" Mike said after he got in. "How did you get enough money to buy Rockefeller Center?"

"It's simple, Mike" Pete said. "Just be sure that you make 2% on your money."

"2%???", Mike said.

"Yes, 2%", Pete said. "After I dropped out of school I bought some property for $10,000 and sold it for $20,000 - a 2% profit. After that I said 'As long as I make 2% I'll be OK'."
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
