This was the fundamental issue and opposition on gay marriage. I have never had a problem with gay marriage at all - but I understand the arguments from the conservatives on how it might wind up being a tool/weapon against traditional values. There's plenty of evidence to support it. Everyone wants to run to the feds when they feel like they've been offended - and right now, the feds are all-to-eager to perpetuate this folly.

Another example is the recent letter from the DOJ to the state of NC regarding HB2 - despite numerous legal precedents in the past that Title VII does not protect against discrimination on the basis of gender identity alone.
