Another possibility - it might take some work but might possibly give a better answer (especially if you want to get the tally of how many values actually changed)...slap an OUTPUT INSERTED.Column as NewVal, DELETED.Column as OldVal into SomeOutputTable at the end. That way you can capture the tally of what changed.
