>>Ah, your original message implied a home party. Parties out are a whole different animal. We only did a couple of those. We always had plenty of space for home parties. For our younger son, my husband would write treasure hunts for the kids.

Our house sits on about an acre, so there's lots of yard. My husband (with the help of our older son) would come up with clues that he'd plant in various places around the property. We'd divide the kids into two teams and start them at different places in the hunt, handing them a first clue. They'd have to solve that and go running off to find the next clue. At the final location in the circuit for each team, there'd be some kind of prize for each kid. I don't remember any of the clues (not surprising since the kid in question turned 30 this year).
FWIW, he also made up a treasure hunt inside the house for my 50th birthday. When I got to the last location, I found Phillies tickets for the first row behind home plate. (That got better. Turned out he'd gotten 5 seats from a friend, and had arranged for one of our kids and my best friend to meet us there, without my knowing. The other kid couldn't come in, so his father used the last ticket.)
