This is an infamous Word issue. In Word 2010 and above trhe default installation does not install the file format readers that were installed automatically in all previous versions of Word. MS did this in an attempt to reduce people doing merges with non-MS formats.

If you open Word and try to import a merge file and drop down the choices of file types, perviously dbf was one of the choices. Now it is not.

Word also removed the ability to use what it calls Word format merge data files, which were in reality ASCII files.

The latter can be restored from the setup program by selecting all the optional file formats.

For the dbf's it is a problem. I know at one time we had a workaround for an app we had, and I have looked high and low and cannot seem to find it. If I can locate it I will post it.

Best bet is if you can change the merge file to be XLS format.
