the sporadic part does point to a router / server in between cutting/loosing the connection or barfing up like SMB2/Oplocks is famous for.
And 2008 r2 AFAIK does not have SMB3, so some patches probably need to be done there for stability IAC.
Only question if there is more work needed ;-)
