>My mom was 29 my entire childhood until Jack Benny, the eternally 39-year-old, died. Then she was 39 for the rest of her life, which is, no doubt, why she was so stunned when my brother turned 50.

>LOL!!! I have always wondered why women lie about their ages. Worst case scenario: let's assume that you actually look your age (unless you have had a lot of plastic surgery). So you tell people that you are actually 10 years younger than you really are. These people are probably thinking "Oh, you poor woman. You must have had a really rough life because you sure have a lot of mileage on you."

I never got the reason for not telling my age either. Well, sort of, I spent a lot of years as the youngest in whatever crowd I was in (thanks to a couple of skipped grades) and sometimes preferred not to tell people how young I was. But as an adult, I've never cared.
My mom was not a happy camper when we put her age on the invitations to her 70th birthday party. But the truth was that many people were stunned that she was that old.
