Who is mentioning the customer? It might be the developer.

As a developer and software architect it is my task to find out more about the reasons behind a request before I give an answer or advice.
It certainly is no benefit to anyone to give an (negative) answer and refer to "best pratices" (for whatever that means) without having any clue about the background of the request.
In that case you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Just take my advice, and ask for the background of a request before you give a "you should not do this as it is not best practise" answer. It really looks very unprofessional
