Comparing a VM machine to a physical hardware machine - however old is a fool's errand. Most virtual machines are comparively slow (and yet more expensive than physically leased hardware). But it all depends on the provider. For example, a couple of years back I compared Microsoft's Azure with mid-range virtual machines and it had a 10th of hte performance of my 6 year old physical hardware (
blog post here).
You may have to shop around and try out machines. I've had good luck with decent performance with
Vultr which in my testing was at least close to the performance of the old box - they use all SSD drives and the VMs are running on recent hardware.
And yes SSDs make a huge difference. With the Azure setup I was running switching from mechanical to SSD nearly tripled overall performance of the VMs (and double the price - Azure is too expensive).
VFP doesn't need a lot of resources so a 4gig dual core machine is usually enough. I run Web applications on the servers I push out, RDP/Citrix with many users is a lot more hardware intensive however.
