I've got a basic idea of what the client/server stuff is *supposed* to do but I just can't seem to make it work. I hope you guys still have patience with me and can help.

At first I thought it was going to be terrible because the only part I understood was the SQL Pass Through statements. But then last night I came across something that discussed views. Then this morning I found a copy of Foxpro Advisor (October 1998) where they discussed some basics of c/s stuff. Okay, so now I'm thinking views are the way to go for most of it.

But I can't get the dratted things to work. I'm trying to get a quick and dirty 2 table thing to work and if I do that I know I can get it to work with the real thing. But I can't even do that. Here's what I've got -- an Access database that I'm making a Foxpro app to go against (don't ask me why... client wants it that way :) ). All I'm trying to do right now is to pull 2 fields from the parent table and 2 fields from the child table and get the child records to appear in a grid on the form with the parent table information on the rest of the form. The link between them is a field in each called encumb_id.
Okay... so I've got these two forms. They're exactly alike except for one has the views in its data environment and the other has local tables (I made tables with the fields I need, including the linking field -- I have the same data in both the parent and in the views that link up to the Access stuff). I used form wizard to create the form and it looks great for the table one. The parent record comes up and it's children show in the grid. And when I move to another record in the parent, the right children show in the grid. On the view one (created the same way with form wizard, but listing the views instead of the tables), the first record of the parent shows and then all records of the child table... even the ones that don't have anything to do witht hat parent.

I think I've narrowed the problem down to a relationship thing. In the tables, I can set indexes and then have one table linked to the other. But in the views I can't set indexes so I can't link the tables.

Am I anywhere near right? Can anyone give me a clue as to what I'm doing wrong? Maybe you need more information? I TRULY appreciate the help. Of course, all of this would happen on a rush-rush project and me not having done any of this before :)

Thanks!!
Denise
