Personal experience in basic training:
One of the recruits displays some of the behaviours typically seen in bad typecast comedies and is assumed to be gay and (lightly)ridiculed.
One night some beer crazy roommates of him gang up - dunno how it started, but they were manhandling/wrestling him to the shower room.
The commotion brought upon onlookers out of other rooms, myself included. Decided between different strategies (going into my room and pretend not to have realized:naah, going to guys sitting at watch: even stronger naaaah, start a real fight: hoh??, not a girl and I was already certain to be straight [plus I had no idea which side the other onlookers would take] so I settled on sarcasm, asking them along the lines "so you want to bring gay xxx into the shower room? Not really the stuff I would do or call normal... You must be stupid or something else", which did penetrate even some alcoholic minds. Uttering it with something similar to drill place command voice made certain the whole floor knew I was not involved, even if front row onlooker - and sowed some uncertainty watch might have noticed, even when I was not going there to tell them. Worked out better than I had hoped, watch was too timid to come up (not the stuff MP's are made of, but only some unlucky other recruits and a non-com) and the momentum/drive was derailed, never mentioned in the following weeks ;-)

When I was a teen, I kept the few circles I moved in without overlap if I could. One was a bit shady - and there were some in those circles I knew that practiced hanging out at places gays frequented (often coming there from suburbs), waiting to be offered money for favors, accepting the money and beating the gays up (without checking, whether they wanted S/M treatment). As prostitution and gay sexuality were illegal back then, no risk of that act being brought to police unless witnessed directly by outsiders. Not my piece of cake, but I did test the borders of legality back then to get money myself, although in different areas. Never went with them, but never ratted on them - did not even try to dissuade them.
