>>If Trump's value proposition is that he'll be a great president because he's a great leader who brings in great people to do the actual work, how come he can't find great people to run his campaign?

A fair answer would be "because he's not president yet." Once he is, people currently working to bring him down can choose whether to remain voices in the wilderness or come into the tent and offer their services. I don't think he'd have any trouble attracting competent people who care about the US once he's elected. Actually people who agree with you that this captain will steer the ship onto the rocks, probably also feel a duty to join him on the bridge with binoculars and maps showing safer routes.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
