I was in management when Taylor's ideas were in vogue. Some people actually tried to apply them to programmers (ouch)

Taylor's ideas never disappeared, but the focus shifted to this man when Japanese cars started lasting 5 times as long as US cars, and eventually took over the market.

For most US organizations quality, accuracy and timeliness have trumped units per hour.

As one customer told me: If I produce a $70,000 order on budget and on time and it goes to the wrong city because the trucker can't read the bill of lading, I blew everything (that really happened.)
