All the right-wing propaganda to the contrary notwithstanding, the federal government has a lot less influence on our lives than do the state and local governments.
For low and middle income people state and local taxes consume a larger share of income than do federal income taxes.
They're hidden in things like rent (the landlord is passing along real estate taxes) and gasoline and booze prices which include large state and local tax elements.
The right-wingers like to pummel the progressive elites, and they can use some pummeling, for sure.
Let's not forget, however, that our federal prisons are bursting with those nice, folksy, state and local officals who have had their hands in the public till.
