The code was in the init of an object and the object it was supposed to bind was not yet declared this time. In a previous version of the class it was later declared, so no problem occurred.
In de help-item 'Event Binding for Visual FoxPro Objects' they write:
* When you specify objects for event binding, make sure they are
* fully instantiated. Do not bind events, methods, or properties
* to an object in its Load or Init event because the object might
* not yet be fully instantiated and can cause the binding operation
* to fail.
So, I discovered the solution, but it nevertheless is a strange error message.
