It's not really horrific - it's mainly that it takes time, so you should plan to minimize that impact if that's important. And afterwards it's a bit of playing Whack-a-Mole resetting things to the way you want them rather than the way Microsoft wants them.

MS started rolling out this Anniversary update just after the anniversary of Win10 introduction - August 2. A relatively small number of people started getting it then but for some reason MS paused on rolling it out to the masses. It looks like this past weekend they've started getting serious about pushing it out to most users, so if you don't already have it you'll be getting it soon.

You can determine your current version of Windows by running "winver" from the start menu or a CMD prompt. The Anniversary update reports "Version 1607" as the major version. I believe the most common prior major version is 1511.
