That was the first lesson many of us learned trying to solder in a chip to allow lower case on the TRS-80, after which the screen stayed dark. Cost twice as much to remedy.
The second lesson was that Tandy saved little more than a buck with its uppercase font chip. Cost $59 to have the upper/lower case variant retrofitted unless you were so silly as to try yourself, in which case $150- at a time when you could buy a running car for $400.
