I see a cynical strategy to link Trump to the "evil empire" bogeyman from the youths of many voters. If the Reds under the Bed want Trump, he's bad for America and you can't trust him.
Of course this message begs the question that US voters aren't very sophisticated. Also confirms that neither campaign is very far from the gutter.
