>>However, I didn't see any European countries threatening to leave the UN when it voted to authorize Bush's insanity.

Actually, the UN didn't vote to authorize it. SecGen Annan said in September 2004 that "From our point of view and the UN Charter point of view, it [GWB's invasion] was illegal." Support for the invasion came from the UK (whose subsequent investigation was highly critical of the decisionmaking and foreign (US) "intelligence" that led to participation,) Australia and from some nations without useful military capability who were paid to bolster the "Coalition of the Willing." Don't you remember "Freedom Fries," "Retreat Monkies" and calls to boycott Champagne because the dirty French (with their permanent Security Council seat) denied there were any WMD so no need to invade Iraq? Or the scoffing at incompetent UN inspectors unable to see WMD under their noses?
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
