I was a small kid, but I did realize that teens from my neighborhood who had dazzled me on the sandlot baseball field came back in wheel chairs or not at all.
We lost over a million of our best men and the world wide casualty number estimates range between 50 and 80 million.
Take Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq and you have tens of millions of more casualties- still counting.
I can't even fathom the number of casualties from wars in Europe, Japan, China, Russia, South America, India and Africa- some still raging.

Victor, we have a lot more to fear from desperate people following some despot or a whacky ideology than we do from some smog.

When we mess with a group's ability to survive economically, we risk inciting that group to do desperate things.

We can improve our environment and protect the economic security of our people, but we have to put our minds to both.
