I think the doctors and schools that Castro put in were a great thing - to be clear, the Soviets funded those as a show.
It was not a result of some Communist financial magic suddenly fixing the Cuban economy.
What you don't see in the "show" is the non-good things like executions of dissenters and the corrupt rulers living better than any king while the people go hungry.
