First: if this is for regular business use, the issue will be not just focus, but lighting. Laser scanners are required in low latency, variable lighting situations.

Second: a .NET dll would be where I would look to handle any security issues associated with accessing local hardware from VFP. wwDotNetBridge would handle the interface.

A camera used for barcode scanning is OK for one-off, occasional use only.

That said: if this is to be used for inventory control, you might want to look at the WorthData Tricoder. A driver that works with VFP is available from them.
