Take a look at the voting map for 2016 and it should be fairly obvious to you. The founding fathers wanted "fly over" country to have some say in the how this country is governed. They did not want the high population centers in New York and California (of course in those days, the high population centers were different) to make decisions for the entire country.

Well, in fact, what the founders wanted was to prevent the country was having an unqualified person or a demagogue. They feared the vote of the people. Sadly, this year, the Electoral College is doing exactly the opposite and giving us an unqualified demagogue.
