>>I was prepared to do that. Then he started making appointments.

Sounds to me like "the devil made me do it." Right now there's a very strong narrative that it's not just moral but noble to oppose Trump at every turn. But history tends to ridicule those who behave that way, even to blame such people for the result they wished for and tried to bring about. It's as if passengers are sticking knives into the steering wires throughout the journey because they don't like the pilot and say he's unqualified, and then as the plane heads for the ground the passengers shriek "see, we were right."

Final observation: Trump's appointments are in line with his campaign pledges, are they not? You heard what he wanted to do, so what's the sense in acting surprised or rearing up in horror because he's doing as you expected. That's a good way for voices to be relegated to a constant negative background hum that gets the door closed on it. Surely people aren't expecting a Cabinet led by Clinton and Sanders with Trump in a Santa suit in the background? ;-) Re giving people a chance: shouting them down as soon as they are appointed or elected, is not giving them a chance.

And as for issues about gay rights etc: from afar, I detect a mood in the electorate that politicians have spent far too much time rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic. E.g. compared to a $47T Medicare deficit that *will* collapse the program, many would consider LGBT rights to be a deckchair constantly repositioned to place of honor by politicians as the ship is about to hit the iceberg. My impression is that Trump truly does consider that LGBT is a done deal that doesn't affect the big tasks he's set for himself. Some would argue that Trump is criticized for hauling on the steering wheel on the bridge and cursing "all astern you /bleep/!!!" rather than attending a ceremony to honor the LGBT throne.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
