They had no hope before, so what did they lose?

I once did systems for a brilliant business owner who had created a thriving business from scratch.
I happened to be in his office as he listened to a mid level employee explain apologetically how he had messed up badly, costing the company a lot of money.
After the employee had left the owner said "I ought to fire that SOB. He didn't even have enough respect for me to try to lie about what he had done."

At least Trump cared enough to lie to them.
