The republicans ran campaigns (this includes Trump of course) that the crime rate is up (it is not), that unemployment is up (it is not), the economy is in worse shape (it is not).and heath care costs are rising faster than ever before (they are not, as matter of fact since Obama care heath care costs have gone up at a lower rate than they have in the past 50+ years) and sadly people fall for such b.s.
A good example of this was displayed during an interview with Newt Gingrich when he was trying to say crime rate is up. When confronted with the facts by the reporter he eventually said...well it FEELS like the crime rate is up - so that's what they're going with. Ya know - screw the facts! who needs those?
..so you see what the mindset is ...it it FEELS true then it must be true.
