Let me offer a different perspective. I don't care much about "my" genealogy
When I say that, I mean no disrespect to it. I truly just don't care.
In my experience, people who put a high value on their genealogy do so because they want to lay claim to some sort of pedigree. You know, something like "My great-great-great-great grandfather came over here on the Mayflower" or "I am descended from an American Indian". My general reaction is "So what? Are you taking credit for an accident of birth?"
