FWIW, from my perspective of nearly 40 years of marriage, there are two keys:

1) Help your spouse grow in the marriage. Support each other in becoming the person you each want to be.

2) Learn to say "This is important to me" and say it only when it is. When your spouse says it, give in and do whatever it is gracefully.
