Now that's something where I'd agree - add to it the stuff that belongs to the browser (bookmarks bar, address bar, tabs, window border with closebox and other buttons), it all takes from the vertical space. Measuring roughly on my monitor, out of 30cm of the window height, only 22cm are the actual threads (and then we'd have to subtract the buttons bar below the tree, the message header, the buttons below the current message).

Reminds me of a window I have on a house, where there's so much framing that the actual glass covers only a quarter of the area of the hole in the wall.
