In regards to this, I would like to collect information on the potential behavior the built-in SQL Server commands to execute a backup might have on the server resources such as CPU and memory.

For example, if a server has 40 GB of RAM, where 2 GB is left for the OS and 38 for SQL Server, as defined in SQL Server "right click Properties\Memory" option, while the backup is being done, is it using the OS memory space of the SQL Server memory space?

I am also curious to know about how it works internally. For example, is the backup procedure dependent or independant of the database size it is currently doing a backup on?

I always assumed this backup is independent of the database size, and it would use only a small portion of memory to perform its repetitive task of creating the .bak file on disk. So, as the backup starts, it will use a certain space of memory and that would be it.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated?
