I think the Task Pane used to go to some Microsoft web site for news, updates etc. I think that web site was shut down long ago so the Task Pane keeps searching for a site that is no longer there.

I haven't used it for years. I seem to recall a tiny checkbox on the VFP9 splash screen that would prevent the Task Pane from loading automatically when starting VFP.
