It recalled a mathematician/musicologist/programmer I knew in mainframe days who discovered that by varying the number of characters/per record he could control the frequencies of the sounds made by a 729IV magnetic tape drive while reading tape. Further, by using the two data channels and the 6 drives on each channel, he created harmonies in stereo.
The program that played "Frere Jaques" in stereo took up two three foot trays of punched cards.
While not doing things like that he wrote the first COS - Card Operating System and TOS - Tape Operating System - the predcessors of DOS - Disk Operating System.
