I know some guys here who simply have their customers invest few dozen euros into an old box and then install linux/postgress (or mysql) on it and use ODBC to connect to that. The differences in SQL dialects between these languages and TSQL are fewer than between VFP sql and any one of them.

I've seen this done (and participated in that on at least one project) and yes it can be done as long as the queries are at sql-1992 level, i.e. no platform specific functions are used.
