Free tables are not slower than dbf based ones. Antivirus might be one reason. You shouldn't open them all and keep open all the time. IMHO that is a bad idea. You need to make sure you have necessary indexes. VFP, by nature, is slow over network. It wouldn't be so easy but if you can do, convert to a C/S database (like postgreSQL, SQL server ...).
