This does not allow to apply formatting.

Fox example,
Text files contain paragraphs like

This contract is between <<customer.name>> and company
issued at <<tran(date())>>  in <<city>>

customer.name is database field which should appear in bold. Also tran(date()), city and other fields should appear in bold.

This requires formatting to be applied only to customer name.
If texts are converted to report labels, this line can manually edited and bold formatting applied.

If memo field is used, it is not possble to apply bold formatting to part of text
So memo field cannot used.
