For me there are two questions here.

Why did the Syrian attack happened. For Assad and the Russians thing where going well. The USA was sidelined. Assad and the Russians are on a much better place than they could have imagined even last year. It seems quite perverse. the speed of the USA reaction doesn't suggest people spent much time thinking about this one.

On the USA end its quite a wake up call for Trump supporters to realise they have no idea who they elected and what he might do. usually policy shifts like this are a slow turn with plenty of self serving justification.This is a complete about turn against everything Trump said in the election campaign. Its alarming.
