With Thor, actually
reduces typing, and reduces typing errors. That's why it makes sense to me to use it beforehand, not afterwards.
By my accounts, the CPU load is, in average, and typically, 5/1000 seconds per 5 million assignment operations (but the mdot assignment is also typically faster than the non mdot assignment 20~25% of the times) - in fact, the load is lower than this because some of the execution time is neutral.
