The smart default these days has to be to not install anything that requires, or can make use of, an internet connection.

Or have an outgoing firewall disallow connections back to the mothership, but these days that's like Whack-a-mole. OTOH maybe that would help flag abuse attempts.

Probably the most disturbing thing is that vendors can make it so that the "full functionality" of devices they sell can't be accessed unless they're "cloud connected". Apparently something like that is what's happened in this Bose case. Maybe it's just supposed to be so Bose can offer "curated suggestions" or some such i.e. separate from the base functionality of the device. But there's nothing preventing vendors from tying basic functions such as volume control to a cloud account or API.
