Were you talking about just the left panel? Bear in mind part of my shot was a message composition window. I have that set to monospaced font so code samples show as they will in pre tags.
It's been a while since I last used any Linux desktop for any length of time, and then it was a couple of LiveCD flavours. When using FireFox/IceWeasel I remember thinking how downright crappy the fonts were. Sounds like Ubuntu (at least) has gained a lot of polish.
