It looks like the issue in the OP has gone away, maybe it was some transient thing while Michel was adding the View pad to the top menu.

Our top and left look similar but not identical. Mine are not great but I can live with them. You have a serifed font for the main message area. I used to use serifed fonts wherever I could but now I find serifed screen fonts smaller than 11 or 12 point to be too fussy. Just my personal preferences.

I think some of those settings can be changed in the settings for this site but I haven't messed with them for a long time.
